Philip Hernández is the only man in Broadway history to have played both Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert in Les Miserables. He made his Broadway debut in the Original Cast of the Tony Award-winning Kander and Ebb musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, directed by Harold Prince.  In Kiss, he created the role of Esteban and later went on to play the impassioned revolutionary Valentin in London's West End and on Broadway.  Philip also created the role of the Reverend Gonzalez opposite Marc Anthony and Ruben Blades in the Original Cast of Paul Simon's The Capeman.  He starred as Rico in the National Tour of Barry Manilow's Copacabana and as Juan Peron in Harold Prince’s 25th Anniversary North American Tour of EVITA.  He also starred in the World Premiere of Jose Cruz Gonzalez’ play Sunsets and Margaritas at the Denver Center Theatre Company (Henry Award, Best New Play).

 

Philip played attorney Enrico Alvarez on ABC's All My Children and appeared in featured roles on the daytime dramas One Life To Live, Loving and Another World.  He has also appeared in Law & Order  and Ugly Betty.  Philip recently completed shooting on the soon to be released independent feature film “The Normals,” and was featured as a psychiatrist who gets blown up because he knew too much on the hit television show Damages.  This season watch Philip in the new CBS series “Person of Interest.” 

 

Mr. Hernández has worked in concert with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein, Robert Shaw and Zubin Mehta, and with Symphony orchestras throughout the United States. Jazz Review called the release of his Latin-Jazz CD, The beat of my heart, “A gift from the heart from one of America’s great voices.” 

 

As a private coach in NYC, Philip helps students develop an individual, healthy, flexible vocal technique, and prepares them for auditioning and working in today’s professional musical theatre.  He has taught at New York’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy, NYU’s Cap 21 professional training program and is currently a faculty member at the prestigious Perry-Mansfield School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.  He teaches master classes and workshops at theatres and universities across North America.  He holds a degree in Theatre and Educational Psychology from the State University of New York and studied acting under the tutelage of legendary teachers Stella Adler and Larry Moss.    

 

His favorite role is being “dad” to his beautiful daughter Mariah.
